Christine Ebersole at The Carlyle

I had a wonderful time listening to Christine Ebersole performing "The End of the World as We Know It Cabaret" at the Cafe Carlyle. The show was amazing — my favorite numbers were Irving Berlin's "Get Thee Behind Me Satan" and the Depression-era classic "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" but her version of Cole Porter's "Blow Gabriel Blow" was triumphant. It was thrilling to see her in such an intimate setting, and we were only a few tables away from Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller. The show is playing through February 25.

Before the show, I was able to tour The Carlyle and inspect many of its suites with panoramic Central Park views (the very best in the city). Each room is individually decorated with lots of antiques (some traditional in style, some more art deco), so let me know your preferences when making a reservation. After the tour (but before the show) we stopped at Bemelmans Bar for a drink. This legendary New York watering hole with mural by Ludwig Bemelmans has the yummiest atmosphere, and their signature cocktail, The Old Cuban, was delicious. Chris Gillespie was at the piano ensuring a fabulous evening was had by all.

Welcome to Rosewood Mayakoba

Our visit to Rosewood Mayakoba started like an ordinary trip. After a quick four-hourflight from Newark, we arrived in Cancun. Customs and Immigration went smoothly, and our driver met us just outside the exit and escorted us to a waiting SUV.Cold-scented towels, bottled water and soft drinks refreshed us for the 30-minuteride to the resort in the Mayan Riviera. Check-in took place in their open-air lobby, and then we boarded the resort’s boat and left the familiar behind. Thecruise along the verdant lagoon was tranquil, with exotic water birdstaking flight on our approach. Modern, cube-like bungalows were scattered alongthe shoreline. Where are on earth were we?

The boat docked right at my room, where steps led up to myprivate deck. First thing I saw was the private plunge pool (thank you) anddouble lounger overlooking the lagoon. My butler met me inside to show off the Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suite.Nespresso maker, check. Walk-in closet, check. Soaking tub, check. Outdoorshower, yes!

The spacious living area had contemporary décor, withfloor-to-ceiling windows on two walls, which slide open (with screens) to letthe outside in (but not the bugs). Wherever we were, I liked it. A lot.

The next morning, I took a long walk in the mangrove preserve,and then we headed out for a full day of adventures. First, we enjoyed aprivate tour of the Mayan ruins of Tulum. This ancient waterfront resort isimpressive (click here for my Tulum post). Then we went zip-lining through the rainforest- thrilling! After that, weexplored a cave and went snorkeling in a cenote, an underground pool formed byrain filtering through the limestone. Swimming around giant stalagmites withthe black fish was a surreal experience, like exploring a lunar landscape.

This full-service beachfront resort also has the usual amenities: a championship golf course, a wonderful spa, a Kids Program, a few pools, and a couple of bars and restaurants. The resort's special sense of place, sensational suites and the fun adventures make this destination seem out-of-this-world.

We interrupt this South America coverage to review my nightat the Waldorf Towers in New York on September 29, 2011. This is theresidential part of the legendary Waldorf Astoria and is perfect for extendedstays or when you want more space than the typical NY room (which can be assmall as a “New York minute” is fast). My Luxury Suite at the Waldorf Towers

My Luxury Suite was huge and had a Park Avenue view. Thedécor was traditional but with modern amenities: iPod docking station,flat-screen TV, etc. A grand foyercomplete with chandelier led to the living room, which had ample space forentertaining with a sofa and plush chair. There was also a desk and the diningarea had a table for two. Then acorridor led to the Bedroom, but closer inspection revealed a wet bar, fullsize fridge, and cabinets stocked with glassware, etc.

The bedroom had a very comfortable King bed and an antiquearmoire along with the second TV. Beyond that was the Dressing room withvanity, valet and huge wall closet. The original safe was in the room and it was a thing of beauty.

The bathroom was large with marble floors, a big tub,separate shower and pretty porcelain vanity. I couldn’t help wishing it had theold-fashioned claw-foot soaking tub, and the modern showerhead the size of adinner plate, which shows you just how spoiled rotten I have become.

I enjoyed the complimentary continental breakfast in theAstoria Lounge. There was a nice spread with good coffee and lots of copies ofthe Wall Street Journal available. Everyonewas super nice and I was sorry my stay was so brief. After a cocktail at thePeacock Alley Bar, I was on the road once again.

Hotel das Cataratas, Iguaçu Falls, Brazil

The penultimate stay on our whirlwind tour of South Americawas at Hotel das Cataratas, an Orient Express hotel within Iguaçu National Park on the Brazilian side of Iguaçu Falls.Once again, we arrived late after a really long day of travel. It was too darkto see the falls upon arrival, but the elegant lobby and comfy leather sofaswere immediately calming. Click here for my photos.

Our Deluxe rooms were special. The décor was warm and brightwith dark woods and tropical accents. Iespecially admired the exquisite Orient Express closet. The bathroom featured traditionalAzulejos painted tiles that were ever so pretty. After a quick change, we met our hosts on the veranda forCaipirinhas. (pronounced 'KIE-PUR-REEN-YAH'). These Brazilian cocktails are made withCachaca (sugar-cane rum), limes and sugar and taste refreshingly delicious. Clickhere for the recipe (but beware of thesecond caipirinha).

Feeling much better after a couple drinks, we headed into dinner at the Ipe grill for a "gaucho-style barbecue" buffet. An epic variety of meats and sausages were slowly grilled on a spit, a real carnivores delight. The smells were so enticing that I had to discard my vegetarian tendencies and eat like a local, but there were lots of fish and salads for my less flexible companions.

This restaurant was near the pool, and each trip back to thebuffet revealed an incredible night sky floating above a gorgeous pool. Asstuffed as we were (and as tired), we couldn’t resist a swim. The Hotel dasCataratas is surrounded by forest and the river, and our stay coincided with aNew Moon, so the sky was pitch black with more constellations gleaming than I’veever seen before. Floating in the tranquilwater while gazing at all those stars was a magical experience. They say it’s just as wonderful during a FullMoon when the hotel offers guided walking tours to the falls where you can seea Lunar Rainbow!

The next morning, we hit the trails at 8am and had theglorious falls all to ourselves. The trails were empty except for otherprivileged guests of the hotel enjoying exclusive access to the park before itofficially opens. Iguaçu National Park opens dailyat 9:00 am, and it takes the first bus twenty minutes to arrive from theVisitor’s Center to our hotel where it drops visitors off at the trail’s head.

Here’s how UNESCO describes this WorldHeritage site:

“The Iguaçu Falls span the borderbetween Argentina and Brazil. Some 80 m high and 3 km wide, the fallsare made up of many cascades and rapids that generate vast sprays of water andproduce one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.”

The trails through lush foliage are very smooth with frequentviewing platforms. Each view is more amazing than the last and there arerainbows in almost every photo. As youget closer to the waters edge, the trail becomes an elevated walkway extendedover the river between two levels of cascading falls. Feel the spray againstyour face, hear the roar of water gushing over the cataract and breathe inthose negative ions (some say they’re the reason we love waterfalls).

After breakfast (buffet breakfast is complimentary), weheaded further into the park for our private Macuco Safari experience. They bill this as a three-part adventure (trolley,hike and boat) and the rainforest is nice (we saw lots of monkeys) but the boatto the falls was the MOST FUN EVER and not to be missed. I confess, I’veexperienced the Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls at least a dozen times, butthis was so much more exhilarating because the boat actually goes under the Falls. Here is abefore photo from our zodiac (I’m afraid the after photo is not for publicviewing but take my professional advice and wearwaterproof mascara, and don’t bother with the rain gear because you’ll getsoaked anyway).

Back to the hotel for a traditional Brazilian lunch offeijoada, a stew of beans, rice and pork parts and garnished with farofa-delicious. We had a little time to digest in loungers by the pool and take afew final photos to help remember our wonderful stay before we headed to theairport. Unfortunately, there was no time to visit the Cataratas Spa or tenniscourts. I urge you to stay here three nights so you can also explore the Bird Parkand the Argentinian side of the Falls and still have some time to enjoy theresort. It’s a perfect combination with a city stay in Rio or Buenos Aires.

Welcome to the Four Seasons Buenos Aires

The final stay of ourwhirlwind trip to South America was at the Four Seasons Buenos Aires. Wearrived late after a long day of travel and had very little time to freshen upfor dinner at 10pm. We went to our Junior Suitesto discover a delicious chocolate welcome amenity, which was a neededpick-me-up.

Sadly, there were no coffee makers in the room and I didn’t havetime for room service. It was a largeroom (646 square feet) with the bedroom separated from the living area by alarge TV armoire thing. The room décor was attractive in a subdued hotel way,but there were evocative tango paintings on the walls. The furniture wascomfortable and looked expensive. Thoughtful touches, like the electricconverter in the desk drawer, were appreciated. The walk-in closet was very well designed.

After I surveyed the room andtook some photos, I needed to quickly get ready. At that point of our journey,the dark circles under my eyes had become like ancient leather valises and Idespaired my repair efforts would be in vain. Then I heard my name being calledsoftly. I looked around the spacious bathroom to observe the huge Jacuzzi tubbeckoning me, scented bath salts at the ready. If only I had more than fifteen minutes to spare, I knew thehydro-massage would restore me. It wasn’t easy to resist, but our hosts werewaiting.

Executive Chef Juan Gaffuricreated a special Tasting Menu for our private dinner, and it was anexceptional meal. After dinner, we went to amilonga for an authentic Tango experience. It was fun to watch the localstango and give it a try.

I returned to the hotel at2am and finally discovered how amazing a Four Seasons bed can feel. Intellectually, I knew their beds were thebest in the industry; but sleeping is believing. Perfection! Only apoet could describe how sublime the linens were. But at 6am, I awoke to hear myname again. As if the Jacuzzi knew my7am wake-up call would only permit a quick shower, it tried to entice me once more. The bed would not release me: who knows when I’ll have anotheropportunity to experience the fabulous Four Seasons bed? It was a pleasantstruggle but the bed won the hour. If only all life dilemmas were as wonderful…

It just looks like an ordinary bed

After a quick bite and cafe con leche from the buffet breakfast at Le Mistral, and our private walkingtour of the city guided by Abercrombie & Kent, we returned for a tour ofthe hotel. We inspected a Deluxe room (definitely upgrade to the Junior Suitefor the extra space, double vanity and Jacuzzi tub). We explored the Preferred Lounge called TheLibrary, the full-service Spa and Fitness center and the Presidential Suite in LaMansion, where Madonna stayed while filming Evita. There they arranged a private tangoperformance and served champagne- amazing! From there, we went to Sunday Brunch foranother superb meal created by JuanGaffuri. The musicians played a Tango version of “Autumn Leaves” as I wandered through the garden admiring the heated outdoor pool.

I'm packing today for my upcoming trip to South America. It will be an amazing trip! We're staying at some wonderful properties: Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, and Aranwa Hotel in Cusco, Peru; Hotel das Cataratas at Iguassu Falls in Brazil; and the Four Seasons in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Celebrity Eclipse ship review

Of all the mega-ships that have launched in the last few years (and they are legion), Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice-class ships are my personal favorites. Sexy design, thoughtful staterooms, a fabulous spa, and appealing restaurants are all welcome ship amenities in my book. Celebrity Cruises is not a luxury line, but this 'Premium' cruise experience is a very good value. The Celebrity Eclipse debuted in April 2010 and like her Solstice-class sisters (Celebrity Solstice 2008, Celebrity Equinox 2009, Celebrity Silhouette 2011 and coming in 2012 is Celebrity Reflection) she has unique features like the Lawn Club (croquet anyone?).

I had an opportunity to tour her in Florida this year, and fell madly in love with the decor. Stylish and contemporary, each public room had delightful details that invited me to join the fun. Every chair beckoned me to 'sit here!' Whimsical lighting features almost winked at me. I was charmed.

Quasar nightclub has a retro space-age vibe

Make no mistake, these ships aren't for everyone. If the urban martini connoisseur crowd is not to your taste and you have no desire to try a sushi lollipop, then this is may not be the ship for you. Staterooms were designed by a coterie of travel industry insiders, mostly women, to create a luxurious experience with careful attention to detail. Clearly, I am their target market!

Allure of the Seas Ship Review

It’s stupendous! It’s colossal! It’s Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas.

The Allure of the Seas made her debut in November 2010 as the largest ship afloat (a fraction of an inch larger than her sister Oasis of the Seas). She accommodates about 6,000 passengers in 2,700 staterooms. None of those passengers are complaining about being bored.

Kids of all ages will jump at the chance to cruise on this leviathan. Little kids will love the Merry-Go-Round, the Dreamworks characters parade, and the H20 Zone kids pool area with sprawling octopus sprinkler. Older kids will like the 3-D movies (featuring Kung Fu Panda 2 this summer), ice skating rink, and 9-hole miniature golf course. Even teens will be impressed by ship features like the 9-deck high Zip line, FlowRider surf simulator, and Rock climbing walls.

Grown ups will appreciate the vast dining and entertainment options. Live entertainment includes Chicago The Musical, signature ice shows, Aqua Theater performances and a comedy club. Restaurants include Samba Grill (a Brazillian Churrascaria), Izumi Asian Cuisine (serving sushi, dumplings and Ishiyaki plates), and Rita’s Cantina for Mexican cuisine.

For the Existentialists who think Hell is other people and this ship sounds like Purgatorio-at-Sea, there are some attractive places for you too. The adults-only Solarium is secluded and quiet, Vintages Wine Bar is a cozy hideout in Central Park and Jazz on 4 is a haven for hipsters.

The design aesthetic is straight from the shopping mall, but Central Park was pretty and the Boardwalk neighborhood did evoke Coney Island. My personal favorite innovation was the Touchscreen Navigation system at each elevator bank. Like a mounted iPad that not only tells you where you are and maps a route from here to there, it also tells you what’s going on and who’s serving food now (and where there are tables available!).

Toured Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Eclipse - such a sexy ship! I loved the decor, especially in all the restaurants. Click here for my photos.Visited the trade show in the afternoon before my classes. The Conference Banquet was just OK but the entertainment was pretty good (especially Mosaic).

Went for a nice walk before the tour of Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas. I wasn't sure I'd like this behemoth- currently the largest ship at afloat. It has a zip-line, a surf machine, a merry-go-round, an ice rink, a rock-climbing wall, etc. It also has a comedy club, a jazz lounge and the Central Park area was really pretty. Cruise Conference, part 1

Day 1.

My flight was delayed (they couldn't get it started) so I caught a later connection and missed a couple classes. I did enjoy the Silversea, Seabourn, and Azamara presentations. Then I met the lovely Noelle for a tour of the RitzCarlton Fort Lauderdale. Gorgeous! Check out my photos here. We enjoyed a drink watching the beach. Then back to my hotel to dine outside at Pelican Landing on the dock of Pier 66. Bed early at H yatt Pier 66.

Day 2
Woke up early (well, early for me) and did a little work before my tour of Regent Cruises' Seven Seas Navigator. Much smaller than the Mariner and her sister the Voyager, I wanted to see how she compared. The verandah suites are just as nice. After the tour, I went back to the Hyatt to check in and download photos. Then back to class, learning all about the Baltic Sea ports. Had sushi for dinner at China Grill. Jumped in the jacuzzi and swam in the pool before hitting the shower and soon the bed.

April Travels

It looks like Spring has finally sprung, so I hope you are enjoying the season. I spent the entire first quarter of 2011 busy at my desk, and I’m ready to get out of town.

This weekend I will be attending a Cruise Conference in Fort Lauderdale, which will take me out of the office from Thursday, April 14, until Tuesday, April 19. I am looking forward to touring Regent’s Seven Seas Navigator, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Eclipse and Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas (check back here for photos). Next week, I’ll be out of the office from Wednesday, April 20, until Monday, April 25.

The Ritz Carlton Toronto lobby

The Ritz Carlton Toronto welcomed my mother and me this past weekend. We made heroic efforts to experience all the facilities in two nights, and here is our review. Click here for my photos.

DÉCOR: We both loved the décor (warm and contemporary) and the attention to detail (every single light fixture was attractive). Canadian touches were featured throughout the hotel, from the bronze maple leaves embedded in the lobby’s marble floor, to a stunning Inuit marble carving displayed by our elevators on the 16^th floor.

THE SERVICE: Every staff member that we encountered was friendly (which I expected) but also seemed sincerely desirous to assist us in anything. Everyone offered concierge-like services in an effort to make sure we had a lovely time in Toronto (including the in-room dining staff!). Many staff members acknowledged us by name, which was impressive during such a short stay. Even the doormen were memorably charming.

The cheese cave at TOCA Restaurant

TOCA by Tom Brodi: This restaurant serves Contemporary Canadian cuisine with a farm-to-table approach in an attractive setting (B/L/D M-F, Brunch and dinner on weekends). There is a glass-enclosed, climate-controlled cheese cave where you are invited to try Canadian cheeses after lunch and dinner. The wine cellar is extensive, and they offer 50 wines by the glass. There is a private dining room with seating for 12, and a gorgeous Chef’s Table in the middle of the kitchen. The dinner menu would impress even the most sophisticated New Yorker (how often do you see beer-battered lobster appetizer or loin of venison?).

TOCA Bar

TOCA Bar: This sexy watering hole is already popular with the financial district workers. Menu includes sustainable Canadian caviar and a raw bar. I saw strips of bacon standing up in a beer glass offered as a bar nibble.

DEQ Terrace Lounge

DEQ: The Terrace Lounge has cozy indoor seating (sofas and fireplace) and a large outdoor patio with fire pit and pizza oven. All-day dining options include tableside charcuterie, fondue-of-the-day (from the cave), flat breads, etc.

ROOMS: Our Deluxe room was a spacious 450 feet with floor-to-ceiling windows and a great view of Lake Ontario and CN Tower. Tech features include a 42’ flat-screen HDTV with DVD player and a BOSE iPod/radio/CD sound system. All of the lighting was adjustable on dimmers for complete control of our environment. Ritz Carlton hotels are known for their wonderful marble bathrooms, and this one had all the ‘standards’ I expected: deep soaking tub, double vanity, shower stall with rain shower head and adjustable hand held. The heated floor was a nice touch, but the TV mirror was an amazing surprise.

SPA: This is what lured us back to Toronto: the 23,000 square foot Spa! Best. Massage. Ever. This urban spa has stylish décor, but no photos were permitted, sadly. There were three Relaxation Lounges for guests to await treatments: Women’s, Men’s and the Sun Room (with floor-to-ceiling windows) all in butter and cream with dark tropical woods that remind you of Bali without being ‘Balinese’. There was a very nice tea selection available (the Vanilla Rooibos is delish) and little nibbles (pumpkin seeds, walnuts and dried apricots). There is a lunch menu available if you can’t tear yourself away, and it’s not just the typical spa fare: bison carpaccio was offered.

The 16 treatment rooms are candlelit with chocolate tilework and another gorgeous light fixture. I tried their Signature ‘Cloud 9 Massage’ and Margaret my masseuse had wonderful hands. Mom received the ‘Breath of Fresh Air Facial’ which included foot massage and paraffin hand treatment; she emerged relaxed and radiant. Spa features include Steam Room, Sauna and Vitality Pools (the Invigorating Pool was shallow with a curved floor and a dozen jets). There are also two showers with eight heads strategically located for a hydro-massage.

The Salon has private pedicure cabins. Fellow spa addicts should note that this isn’t a “holistic” spa experience: nothing feng shui about the décor, they played low-key contemporary music in the Relaxation Room, the staff didn’t use the phony spa voice, etc.

The lap pool

The lap pool is surrounded by inviting lounge chairs, windows overlooking the city, and a Jacuzzi discreetly placed in the co,rner. According to the hotel website, there is a Yoga Studio by Yogagurl offering group and private classes and there’s a state-of-the-art Fitness Centre with Techno-Gym strength training, Kinesis and Precor Cardio Equipment (but I didn’t seek out those particular amenities).

PROMOS: There is an introductory Third Night Free promotion valid until September 5, 2011. FROSCH guests will receive complimentary continental breakfast daily and $100 Food & Beverage credit. My clients will also receive an upgrade and Late Check-out if it is available.

New York Weekend

I just got back from a long weekend in New York. The New York Marriott Marquis’ Times Square location is great for a theater weekend. The rooms are reasonably sized and well maintained. The elevators are my favorite: computerized system efficiently assigns you an elevator based on your floor to avoid too many stops and overcrowding, and they're glass overlooking the Atrium, letting you enjoy the view on the way up.

Arrived on Friday afternoon and enjoyed a Greek seafood dinner at Kellari Taverna. Then went to see “That Championship Season” at the Jacobs Theatre. It was fun to see this all-star cast (Lost Boys’ Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Patric reunited, along with Chris Noth, Brian Cox and Jim Gaffigan), but the play was just OK.

I did some shopping on Saturday and had dumplings for lunch at Mandoo Bar in Little Korea (near Macy’s). Dinner was at Hell's Kitchen, a 'nouvelle Mexican' restaurant. The late show of Shamekia Copeland at Iridium was amazing. You should check out her Blues originals.

Sunday Brunch at Friend of a Farmer in Greenwich Village was good (I recommend the Pumpkin Pancakes). Finally made it to Babbo (Mario Batali’s first New York restaurant) for an early dinner. It did not disappoint!

Monday morning, I headed to the FROSCH headquarters at 909 Third Avenue to meet with my colleagues and get some work done. Then I headed to the Heartland Brewery at Times Square for dinner with many old friends.

Worked a few hours on Tuesday morning before hitting the road. I’ll be back at my desk Wednesday morning.

Non-stop Elmira-Fort Lauderdale!

The Elmira-Corning Airport is getting non-stop service to Fort Lauderdale just in time for Thanksgiving, and fares are starting at $45 each way plus tax (based on availability). Allegiant Airlines is flying twice a week (Mondays and Fridays) and the schedule is offered through May 2011 as of this posting.

The flight times aren’t ideal:

Elmira-Fort Lauderdale 7:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Fort Lauderdale-Elmira 4:10 p.m. - 6:50 p.m.

This is a great option for flexible folks visiting family, but it is not recommended if you have a fixed schedule (and NEVER for cruise passengers). Allegiant is a charter airline, and the government rules regulating them are very different from the commercial airlines (like Delta and US Airways). If Friday's flight is cancelled (for weather, mechanical issues, whatever), they must book you on the next available flight or provide a refund. Hopefully, Monday's flight has seats available, so you'll only be 3 days late... They will not re-accommodate you on another airline. Here's a link to their Contract of Carriage, look at number 85.

Allegiant Airlines is based in Las Vegas, and was founded in 1997. They started flying from Elmira two years ago with non-stop flights to Orlando's Sanford Airport (here's the link to my post).

Pompeii

I usually advise clients to explore the Amalfi Coast when stopping in Sorrento to enjoy a relaxing day enjoying the stunning scenery and little resort villages. Instead of taking my own advice, I went to tour the ruins of Ancient Pompeii. It was as hot, long and tiring as I have cautioned; the four-hour walking tour over uneven terrain in the very hot sun of July was not for the faint-hearted, especially considering all the important artifacts have been moved long ago to the museum in Naples. Still, it was a rare chance to experience a Roman city and is an essential stop on the Grand Tour. It was an hour by bus from Sorrento to the ruins with some great views of Mount Vesuvius along the way. Upon arrival, we entered the Roman city of Pompeii. The tour visited the Forum, the bakery shop, the fast food joint and the plaster cast of several victims including the Dog of Pompeii. We also saw the Roman mosaics, some wall paintings and the iconic dancing fawn.

Olympia

The ship arrived in Katakolon, Greece which is on the mainland. This area is close to Olympia, Birthplace of the Olympics. Our Guide was fascinating and helped bring the ruins to life. Unfortunately the tour did not include admission to the museum, but I was able to skip our brief shopping time to go in and browse the extensive collection. There was a whole room devoted to bronze miniatures, and the statues were impressive.

There is nothing much else of interest in this area, although some tours include a "Zorba Event." How could it be as good as Anthony Quinn dancing in the film?!

Corfu

Welcome to the Greek island of Corfu!

Here's the tour I selected for the morning: Achilleion Palace, Perama & Corfu Town, which visited the Austrian Empress Elisabeth's home built in 1891. There were very pretty gardens, sculpture and lovely views from the three terraces. Corfu Town was small and charming, pretty easy to enjoy on your own. Perhaps next time, I would choose to travel North to one of the beaches and swim in the Aegean Sea...

Dubrovnik

This walled Medieval city looks exactly the same (well, except for the tourist shops). The old square, the narrow streets, the Franciscan Church were all enchanting. Here's a link to more information about Dubrovnik.

Hotel Cipriani

Hotel Cipriani was an oasis, the ideal place to stay during the summer. Just five minutes away from the bustle of St Mark’s Square, their complimentary water shuttle was a pleasant way to get to the heart of Venice Island. The hotel docks steps away from the St. Mark’s Vaporetto stop, making the whole city within easy reach. If I had more time, I would have retreated to their Olympic-sized pool for an afternoon swim during the hottest time of the day. After a Bellini, head back to Venice Island for dinner and strolling.

My “Palladio Suite” was spacious, with a little terrace and a Lagoon view. I loved the bathroom, especially the shower: two heads converging plus the hand-held was wonderful. Room décor was a little Laura-Ashley-goes-to-Venice for my taste, but every detail was perfect (look at this closet!). The gardens were charming. Dinner at Cip’s Club looked like a fabulous way to watch the sun setting on St. Mark’s Square.

Venice

The flight arrived a few hours late so I splurged on a water taxi to the hotel (fabulous, felt like James Bond arriving in style). Hotel Cipriani is wonderful, a quiet oasis 5 minutes by boat from St Mark’s Square (complimentary hotel shuttle operates every ten minutes 24 hours a day). The “Palladio Suite” has a lagoon view from the balcony, lovely.

Immediately headed to St. Mark’s Square. Enjoyed Bellinis and lunch at Harry’s Bar, fave haunt of Hemingway (cold zucchini soup and cuttlefish salad). Dinner at Al Covo was delicious (mussels and monkfish). Between meals, I walked all over Venice enjoying the city’s charm.

Day 2 began at Rialto Bridge and the Fish Market. Ate brunch at Florian’s, which was highly recommended by Henry James, Dickens and Proust (shrimp salad with radicchio). The 24-hour vaporetto pass was a pleasant way to cruise the Grand Canal (18 euros). Ate a wonderful dinner at Osteria Antico Giardinetto (crudo platter and pumpkin gnocci with zucchini flowers and shrimp).

The tour of Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Basilica began at 8am on Day 3. Managed to get lost in Cannaregio which completed my Venice experience. I’ll definitely come back to spend more time, but not in summer: too hot, too humid and too crowded. The billboards were disconcerting, but I suppose they must fund the restoration work somehow. Where are the famous cats of Venice?

Summer Update

The Royal Hawaiian

The Royal Hawaiian was my home in Honolulu on my recent trip to Hawaii. This Starwood hotel is part of The Luxury Collection. Click here for my Slideshow.

What I loved:

Great location in the heart of Waikiki Beach, this landmark luxury hotel is perfectly situated on a lovely stretch of sand with awesome views of Diamond Head.
Beach service: All beaches on Oahu are public and serving alcohol is not permitted, but the Royal Hawaiian was grandfathered in allowing beach service in a roped off section of the beach.

Fabulous décor: Recent restoration updated the style while retaining the classic features (like the hand-carved doors).
Sensational luau. This ocean-front dinner show called Aha'aina was truly a 'Royal Celebration' with first-rate talent and a delicious sit-down meal.

What I liked less:

Small rooms. This historic property opened in 1927. Guest rooms are small and bathrooms are very small. Consider a suite.
Small pool, but exchange privileges with Sheraton Waikiki next door gives access to large free-form pool.

Big Island

I've been too busy on the Big Island to post until now, my last morning in Hawaii. Here's a summary of my itinerary here:

Thursday, April 29. Breakfast at JW Marriott Ihilani (with resort tour) and then flight from Oahu to Kona on the Big Island. Welcome to the Fairmont Orchid (love the Deluxe ocean-view room here) and dinner at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel (with resort tour).

Friday, April 30. Breakfast at Waikoloa Beach Marriott (with resort tour) and lunch at Sheraton Keauhou Resort (with resort tour). A little break was scheduled for shopping in Kona Town, but I managed to arrange a resort tour of the stunning Four Seasons Hualalai instead (sorry Mom). Then we had a resort tour of Hapuna Beach Prince, and a superb dinner at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (with resort tour).

Saturday, May 1. At 6am, Blue Hawaiian picked me up for my two-hour "Big Island Spectacular" Helicopter Tour and it was amazing! I took a million photos and a little video but haven't even looked at them yet, but here are some professional videos for you to enjoy. Then I went for a mile hike, ate breakfast and enjoyed the beach for a couple hours before our resort tour of the Fairmont Orchid. The grand finale was the the dinner show "Gathering of the Kings."

Wish I had a little more time to enjoy the beautiful spa, explore the petroglyphs and swim with the resident turtles.

Goodbye Oahu

We are at the Honolulu Airport waiting to board our flight to the Big Island. Last night we had a wonderful dinner at Orchids at Halekulani (the coconut cake was divine). Then we celebrated our last night on Oahu with a delicious lavender-cucumber Mojito at RumFire, the ocean-front hot spot at the Sheraton Waikiki. The moon was full, the breeze was as refreshing as the drink, and the view of Waikiki Beach was sensational.

It's a 45 minute flight to Kona on the Big Island. We check into the Fairmont Orchid and then head to dinner at Mauna Lani Bay.

Aloha! Greetings from the Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort on Waikiki Beach. It's a beautiful day in Honolulu. It's a beautiful property and my room is lovely. This is my first Pink Palace hotel experience (but I hope it won't be the last).

Last night we enjoyed the Royal Hawaiian Luau Aha'aina which is an amazing dinner show. The Samoan Fire Dancer was my personal favorite.

We've been touring resorts since 6am this morning. So far, we've seen the Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Waikiki, the Westin Moana Surfrider and the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Next stop, Trump International. And tomorrow, I will ride a Seaplane.

My trip to Hawaii has been confirmed for April 26-May 3! I'm really excited to stay at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu and the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island. The itinerary is manic; we tour three or four resorts per day.

Highlights of the trip will be: having dinner at the new Trump International, and the Halekulani (both with resort tours). On the Big Island, I'm arranging a private tour of the Four Seasons Hualalai. I'll try to make time to visit Pearl Harbor and the volcano too.

I'll be posting details and photos here, so stay tuned.

Fees for Carry-on Bags

Spirit Airlines has taken baggage fees to the next level and begun charging for carry-on bags. In fact, passengers will pay more for carry-on bags than checked bags (although personal items are still free). The excuse is that overhead bins are too crammed, which makes getting on and off the plane take longer. The logic is if you bring less, you pay less.

The big question is: Will other airlines add similar fees? Wait and see - I'll keep you posted.

Here's is a summary of Spirit's new policy:

-If it's small enough to fit under the seat in front of you, it's free (16 x 14 x 12").

-Carry-on bag for overhead bin costs $30 online, $45 at gate (22 x 18 x 10")

-First Checked bag is $19 online, $25 at airport

-Second Checked bag is $25 online, $25 at airport

-Third, fourth and fifth checked bags cost $100 each.

*Members of their Club pay reduced baggage fees.

The new policy is in effect for tickets purchased after April 6, and travel departing August 1, 2010 and beyond.

Airlines Raise Fees Again

The New Year has brought another wave of fee hikes from airlines. Delta, Continental, United, American, and US Airways have all increased checked baggage fees. Yes, they are obnoxious, but consider that air fares are lower now than they've been in the last ten years.

Tulum tour

One of the highlights of my trip to the Mayan Riviera of Mexico was the excursion to the Tulum ruins. We opted for Amstar’s “Tulum Express” tour, a small-group tour with a maximum of 12 passengers. It cost around $60 per person, which included all transportation and entrance fees.

Secrets Silversands is near Puerto Morelos, about 15 minutes drive from the Cancun Airport, so it was about an hour to Tulum (a little more due to construction). The van picked us up at the resort at 8:00 am, and we returned at 1:00 pm. There were only seven of us in the group. The road is very good but not particularly scenic. There is still a lot of development and construction going on in this area.

The parking lot is a distance from the ruins, with a mediocre craft market. A trolley takes you to the ruins for a small fee (included in the tour) or you could walk. Tickets are required to enter the ruins, and there is an additional fee for video cameras (digital cameras and cell phones with video capabilities were ignored).

This walled city has a spectacular location perched above the Caribbean Sea with amazing views. The reef from Belize protects the shore and creates a lagoon-effect with turquoise waters. The ruins aren’t that old (the city’s heyday was 1200-1500) but it was interesting to imagine this ancient gated beachfront community for the affluent and powerful. There is even a Mayan lighthouse! Nothing remains of the thatched huts outside the walls where the peasants lived. Wooden steps lead to a small public beach. Lots of iguanas wander the grounds.

For those really interested in the Mayan civilization, Chichen Itza (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and Coba may be better options, but both would be a full- day trip with much longer travel times. For the rest of us, Tulum is perfect- a pleasant few hours where you learn a little about the history of the region and are back at your resort in time for lunch. Families might enjoy a combo tour to Tulum and Xcaret, an eco-archaeological theme park with cultural demonstrations, or Xel-Ha, an open-sea aquarium.

Hola from Mexico!

Here is the view from our Junior Suite at Secrets Silversands on the Mayan Riviera. This morning we're going to explore the ruins of Tulum.

Flights from Ithaca on US Airways went pretty well, and the resort is just 15 minutes from the Cancun Airport. The room is very nice, complete with jacuzzi tub and marble shower. Meals have been good, especially the chicken mole. Gotte make time for the spa.

CityCenter Las Vegas

The CityCenter development in Las Vegas is HUGE. They say you'll either love it or hate it but I still can't decide.

CityCenter is very grey and the contemporary architecture is very different from the rest of the Strip, but it is sexy. The public art like this eraser by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen (I hope) and Henry Moore's 'Mother and Child" are nice additions. Right between Bellagio and Monte Carlo on the Strip, the location is excellent. Hoards were pouring into Crystals, the mega-mall (correction: "Retail & Entertainment District"). The Mandarin Oriental was having a grand opening celebration which prevented me from snooping.

Pedestrians are justifiably outraged by the design, which forces them to walk the equivalent of three city blocks (complete with huge flight of stairs) to keep their driveway free of human obstructions. Perhaps when construction is completed, they'll implement a better solution.

I admit to loving the molto fabuloso Las Vegas and Caesar's Palace is still my favorite hotel here (best shower ever). So when Vegas goes all urban sophisticate, it feels inappropriate. If CityCenter were in NYC, the piazza-like space would be for people, not cars and there would be a lot more plants to mitigate the grey.

They have definitely decked the halls Vegas-style at MGM Grand in Las Vegas! The conference was great, I learned a lot. A highlight was the 'Speed Dating' sessions where I met with over 75 representatives from hotels, cruise lines and tour operators in a single afternoon!

It was also nice to meet my new colleagues from FROSCH. With 45 locations in 12 states, this huge company still feels like a family business. After the New Year, we will complete the transition by changing logos and email addresses (I'll keep you posted).

December Update

Tomorrow, I’m heading to Las Vegas for a conference and will be out of the office Thursday, Dec. 3, and Friday, Dec 4. I will be checking voicemails and emails periodically, and can book travel, but my response time will be slower than usual. The conference schedule is intense but I do plan to check out the new CityCenter, which opened this week.

The following weekend, I am escaping to the Mayan Riviera for some fun and sun. I will be out of the office Monday, Dec. 14, and Tuesday, Dec. 15. I haven’t been to this region since Hurricane Wilma, and plan to tour the ruins of Tulum this time.

For the holidays, the office will be closed Dec. 24–25 and Dec. 31–Jan. 1.

New Ithaca-DC service!

US Airways has just announced that it will be adding non-stop flights from Ithaca to Washington DC's Reagan National Airport. This is part of larger deal with Delta where they have swapped slots: Delta will expand at LaGuardia while US Airways expands in DC. Here's the Press Release.

These changes are subject to government approval, and there's no information about when the service will commence, when the flight times will be or how much the fares will be yet. I will keep you posted as more information becomes available.

This is great news for Ithaca, especially now that winter cruises are sailing from Baltimore.

Four Seasons Resort Exuma Closing

The Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma is closing in two weeks, effective May 26. The Development company that owns the resort has been in receivership and a new owner could not be found.

There are many lessons to be learned here about traveling in a weak economy:

1. Use a travel agent, preferably one who has a preferred relationship with the hotel company.

2. Don't assume that the hotel brand actually owns the property. Licensing agreements are the norm in the travel industry.

3. Buy travel insurance with financial default coverage (and check the list of suppliers included)

4. Use your credit card for all travel purchases (most cards offer some additional protection for travel purchases but check with your bank for details)

Here's an excerpt from the Press Release:

"PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), the receiver, has worked diligently to identify a new owner for the development, which includes the Hotel. PWC announced some important developments today regarding the status of the receivership and sale process.

After much deliberation, and in the absence of being able to identify a new owner for the development, the receiver has reluctantly decided to close the development. This is a decision which was very difficult for the receivers to make, and they look forward to a point in the future when this development will reopen under new ownership and continue to contribute to the Exuma community. Four Seasons has agreed to an orderly closure of the Hotel to guests effective as of May 26, 2009. It is unlikely that the Hotel will reopen as a Four Seasons.

Our sales teams both at the Hotel and in New York are actively working with our clients and guests to rearrange any bookings that have been confirmed for beyond May 26. "

NYC Theater Weekend

My husband surprised me with an amazing trip to New York last weekend. He got tickets to "God of Carnage" and "Waiting for Godot" to create an unforgettable Existential Birthday getaway! Both plays have just been nominated for Tony awards, and we highly recommend them. "God of Carnage" features James Gandolfini, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden. The acting was terrific, it was an intense domestic drama. All four actors have been nominated for best actor/actress in a play. "Waiting for Godot" stars Bill Irwin, Nathan Lane, John Goodman and John Glover. It was excellent! The comic timing was superb. We stayed at AKA Times Square which I'll review soon (loved it).

Mexico Travel Information (Swine Flu)

An hour after Carnival's press release, the other cruise lines have followed suit (big surprise). Here is a link to to an article describing all revised itinerary details.

As of April 29 at 10a, the US State Department has NOT restricted US travel to Mexico. The CDC has suggested that Americans avoid non-essential travel to Mexico. The WHO has not advised that any borders be closed or any travel to be restricted. That said, I am advising my clients to cancel their upcoming trips to Mexico.

Most airlines have relaxed their change penalties for tickets to Mexico for travel within the next couple weeks. Here's a link to a summary of airline policies. Many resorts and vacation wholesalers have also relaxed their cancellation penalties and will allow trips to be re-scheduled without penalties. Contact your travel agent for more information.

Cruise Line cancels Mexico stops

Carnival Cruise Lines seems to be the first company to cancel all stops in Mexico for the upcoming week due to the Swine flu epidemic. I received this notification at 8pm. I predict that Royal Caribbean will follow suit shortly to avoid massive cancellations. Most other lines have their fleet based in Europe and Alaska this summer, which are unaffected areas.

Dear Travel Partner,

Carnival Cruise Lines has decided to cancel all calls at Mexican ports for all current sailings and all voyages departing on Thursday, April 30th through Monday, May 4th. In many cases, we will be able to substitute the cancelled call with an alternative port. Additionally, we are working on alternatives for those itineraries impacted by this decision. Full details will be available by 5pm Wednesday, April 29th. Once final details are confirmed for these itinerary changes, we will send you an automated message listing your impacted bookings for each affected voyage.

Celebrity Cruises

I inspected the Celebrity Constellation in October 2008 and am finally posting the review (click here for slideshow). The truth is that I liked this ship but didn’t love her. The staterooms were attractive with decent design, the public areas were very nice and the space was well utilized. So why am I lukewarm? It looks like a lot of other cruise ships, and there were no distinctive elements to impress me.

In fairness, Celebrity is one my favorite Premium Cruise lines and I loved sailing on the Celebrity Century (before the big stretch and refurbishment in 2006). That ship had a very boutique hotel design with delicious color, space-age furniture, great tile work (especially in the spa) and fabulous carpets. Aesthetically she had a very distinctive personality, which I loved.

The Celebrity Constellation was the last of the four “Millennium Class” sisters (Celebrity Millennium, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Infinity); she began cruising in 2002. Nine hundred and seventy five staterooms accommodate a little over 2,000 passengers. Perhaps the ship designers were trying to appeal to a broader demographic without sacrificing Celebrity’s reputation for sophisticated cruising.

As I said, the staterooms are attractive with lots of wood, and blue/grey/beige colors. The minimum room categories are much larger than any Royal Caribbean stateroom (and for a similar price) and the suites are quite nice (and come with extra concierge class amenities). The Royal Suite is very spacious, with a great layout (538 sq. ft. room with 195 sq. ft. balcony) and two whirlpool tubs (in bath and on veranda). The Penthouse Suite is ideal for entertaining (1,432 sq. ft. room, 1,098 sq. ft. veranda) with a butler’s pantry, wet bar on veranda and baby grand piano, plus there’s a connecting Sky Suite for your entourage (or your kids).

Tha AquaSpa facilities were extensive with Solarium, Thalassotherapy pool and Persian Gardens (fee to use the spa facilities). The Conservatory was special with lovely greenery. The San Marco Restaurant (traditional two seatings for dinner) is grand, and Michael’s Club is always sumptuously comfy. The other public areas were nice, but not unique or sensational.

Which is why I’m so excited by the Solstice Class ships. The Celebrity Solstice debuted in November 2008 with much fanfare after months of hype, and by all accounts she deserves the accolades. Click here for more details on the Celebrity Solstice.

October is National Cruise Vacation Month according to CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association). Every cruise line has heaps of specials this month: reduced deposits, reduced fares, free upgrades, on-board credit, etc. A few companies are offering the best values for bookings made October 16-18, but most go through the end of this month. All sail dates and all destinations are included, although Fall 2008, and Europe and Alaska 2009 are especially promoted. The specials can be combined with past passenger and Virtuoso offers. Now that summer’s over, you might consider thinking about your winter travel plans sooner rather than later. Although the media has been gloom-and-dooming about gas prices, airline crisis and economic downturn for months, the truth is there are some fabulous deals out there.

-The airlines have cut back their schedules, so booking early is more important than ever.
-Resorts are nervous about the economy so they have released great Early Booking incentives with discounted rates and free-night promotions (many require booking by October 15 for 2009 travel).
-Cruise rates are lower than last year according to trade publication Travel Weekly.
-Continental Airlines’ new service has decreased fares from Ithaca across the board.
-Fares to the Caribbean and Mexico are the same as last year.
-Fall travel deals are the best I’ve seen in years, so consider a getaway during Fall Break or Thanksgiving.

Non-stop Elmira-Orlando!

The Elmira-Corning Airport is getting non-stop service to Orlando’s Sanford Airport starting this November. Allegiant Airlines (no, I’ve never heard of them before either) is flying Thursdays and Sundays and the schedule is offered through February 2009 as of this posting. The flight times aren’t ideal: Elmira-Sanford 10:20am- 1:00 pm; Sanford-Elmira 7:00am-9:40am.

No way will I recommend them until service actually starts, and with such a limited schedule, I would never trust them for a cruise departure. I vividly remember Transmeridian flying to Sanford from Syracuse until they went belly-up stranding thousands (not my clients though). It is a decent option for folks visiting family and Thanksgiving flights are available for $89 each way plus tax (round-trip ticket is $196.50 with taxes included) if purchased before October 15. February Break prices are considerably higher already.

Allegiant Airlines is based in Las Vegas , so let’s hope that if this Florida service is successful they will consider adding a non-stop flight to Vegas too (a girl's gotta dream).

US Airways "stingiest airline"

A Time Magazine article describing the myriad fees airlines have recently imposed on the public has named US Airways the stingiest airline in the industry. We are not surprised. Not only do they charge for the first and second checked bag, but they also charge you for a soft drink in flight. They've also increased their fees for issuing tickets by phone, change penalties, and escort fees for kids traveling alone.

Sailing the South Seas

You must add Bora Bora to your list of places to see before you die. One terrific way of exploring French Polynesia is by ship, and there are lots of choices.

Nomade Yachting Bora Bora
This is my first choice for cruising in Paradise — superb cuisine, contemporary Polynesian décor and lots of special touches make this the ideal way to experience Tahiti. A maximum of 40 lucky guests are pampered in style by a crew of 43. (That’s me enjoying the sunset aboard the Ti'a Moana in the photo above.) Classic six-night itineraries are available from Bora Bora sailing Mondays year-round, which combine nicely with a few nights stay in an over-water bungalow.

Instead of flying, why not cruise to paradise? Holland America has my favorite South Seas itinerary aboard the ms Ryndam. This unique 30-day cruise starts and ends in San Diego, sailing to Hawaii and French Polynesia on Jan. 4, 2009. It’s perfect for snowbirds looking for a more exotic experience than a condo in Florida! Visit Maui, Kauai, both sides of the Big Island, and spend two days in Honolulu. (Be sure to explore the Polynesian Cultural Center.) Continue to Tahiti where you’ll enjoy Raiatea, Papeete, Moorea, and spend two perfect days in Bora Bora. The last port of call is Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas before sailing back to California.

Silversea has just announced that their luxury expedition vessel, Prince Albert II, will be cruising the most isolated and remote islands of French Polynesia with roundtrip itineraries from Papeete. From March through October 2009, there are 10 to 15 day itineraries exploring the Marquesas, Tuomotus, and Australs. Up to 132 passengers will go where very few tourists have gone before on what is sure to be a fabulous cruise experience.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is my favorite cruise line, but they sold the Paul Gauguin to another company and now merely manage ship operations. That means the cuisine and service are still first-rate but the accommodations may not be maintained to Regent’s usual high standards. Nevertheless, this remains a top choice for a classic itinerary on a luxury cruise. The ship’s 330 guests can enjoy ocean-view staterooms and suites (more than 50% of which have balconies), three restaurants, a watersports platform and spa. During school breaks, they feature a wonderful youth program for kids 9-17 through Jean-Michel Cousteau (and he occasionally sails aboard as a guest lecturer).

Star Clippers
The Star Flyer is based in Papeete, cruising French Polynesia year-round with 7-, 10- and 11-night itineraries. These tall sailing ships are the real deal, and guests can help hoist the sails or climb the mast if they desire. The rest of the 170 guests can enjoy a relaxed adventure. This is a unique experience and a very good value, but cabins are small. Free air promotions are available for pre-holiday December sailings. They also have great deals for honeymoons (brides sail at 50% off; restrictions apply).

Princess Cruises
From October to December, Tahitian Princess sails 10-night itineraries roundtrip from Papeete. Pacific Princess takes over in 2009. These are Princess’ “small ships” with 670 passengers and most of the amenities of a larger vessel. Staterooms are small (and bathrooms are very small) unless you book a suite.

Charter your own yacht (with or without crew) for a completely private adventure with Tahiti Yacht Charters. I enjoyed a delightful afternoon on one of their four-bedroom catamarans and inspected several others and heartily approve. Swimming off the ship anchored in an isolated lagoon was absolute bliss.

Hop on a freighter to Paradise aboard the Aranui (much more exotic than back-packing across Europe).

Continental returning to Ithaca -yay!

Very exciting news for Ithacans: Continental Airlines is resuming service from Ithaca to Newark, New Jersey, starting this October. This will expand our travel options exponentially, especially for international travel. After months of gloom-and-doom reports and speculation that airline cutbacks could result in the airport closing altogether, we are thrilled with this new development. St. Regis Bora Bora review

We were met at the Bora Bora airport by a gorgeous yacht (a smaller boat is sent for smaller group arrivals), which whisked us to the resort’s reception dock: marble walkway under thatched roof. Spread out on 44 acres and five motus in Bora Bora’s lagoon, within sight of the Four Seasons (opening soon) and Le Meridien, this luxury resort opened in 2007.

My Deluxe Overwater Villa was 1,550 square feet big. The entry hall led to the living room with sofa, glass coffee table for viewing fish below, dining table for two and floor-to-ceiling windows on two walls. Sliding wood doors enclosed the spacious bedroom with King bed and luscious linens. All villas here include butler service, twice-daily maid service and ultra-modern amenities including not one but two 42-inch plasma TVs, Bose CD/DVD player, wifi, an espresso maker, etc. They also have snorkel gear, a beach bag with beach towels, and outdoor showers.

The bathrooms are enormous, with sliding mirrors that separate to allow for lagoon views from the shower and vanity. There is a separate WC, a walk-in closet, his-and-hers sinks, and an open shower with rain showerhead. Tempting bath products, including two varieties of bath salts, make the huge soaking tub irresistible. A glass panel in the floor of the bathroom reminds you this superb granite bathroom exists in paradise.

Sliding French doors from both the bedroom and the living room lead onto the deck, where there are loungers, a shaded dining area and steps leading into the lagoon. The water was sublime. My villa had a fantastic view of Mt. Otemanu from the living room.

The Overwater Villas are fairly close together, although it’s possible to strategically open blinds to create a sense of complete privacy from inside. Royal Overwater Pool Villas have unobstructed views so they will feel more private, but the Pool Beach Villas and Private Oceanfront Pool Villas are the most secluded. For families, there are the Royal Oceanfront Pool Villas with two bedrooms and two bathrooms (the resort has a Kid’s Program too). The Royal Villa was amazing, with three bedrooms, five bathrooms, a private pool, sauna, hammam, Jacuzzi and beach.

All the amenities you expect from a five-star resort are available, including a 13,000-square-foot Spa and Fitness Center, and a swim-up pool bar. There are three restaurants. Lagoon by Jean-Georges (Vongerichten) is the signature restaurant here, and the over-water setting with indoor and outdoor seating enhances the dining experience. Complimentary bicycles are available during the day, and a golf cart pickup is just a phone call away.

Bora Bora Lagoon Resort & Spa

Located on a private motu across from Vaitape, the main town of Bora Bora (7 minutes by complimentary resort ferry), this property feels isolated but is very convenient to shops/restaurants. The traditional Tahitian décor is enhanced with lots of art and sculpture. The 160-foot infinity pool is stunning. Maru Spa is beach front with two tree house treatment rooms.

Premium Motu Bungalows and Motu Suites are steps to beach with private plunge pool. Two-bedroom Villa has two bathrooms (both with outdoor shower) and private infinity pool, making it perfect for families or two couples.

This Orient Express property has great specials for travel through December 21, 2008: Stay 4 nights (or more) in Overwater Bungalow, and the meal plan is free! Stay 6 nights (or more) in Overwater Bungalow and you get the Meal Plan plus a free night at the Radisson Plaza in Tahiti. The American Plan includes continental breakfast, a la carte lunch (main course plus dessert), three-course dinner. Contact me for more details.

InterContinental Resort & Thalasso Spa, Bora Bora

This was a very sexy resort with contemporary Polynesian décor located on a small islet in Bora Bora's lagoon . They have a huge infinity pool with great Mt Otemanu view.

Their over-water Chapel (also with great Mt Otemanu view) can be used for private functions, as well as weddings where couples seem to walk on water to the alter (not legal service for Americans). Lagoon location allows groom to arrive by canoe in Traditional dress for a romantic Tahitian ceremony.

This property is the first hotel in the world to use deep sea water for all of it's air conditioning, which is a great idea in eco-hotel engineering. They credit Marlon Brando with the concept in the resort brochure (he owned an island in French Polynesia). The thermal heat transfer is extremely efficient, and the pure sea water is also used in the spa.

The Deep Ocean Spa, operated by Algotherm, was amazing (gorgeous setting with a variety of appealing treatments performed by French beauticians). Marine treatments, contouring treatments and Tahitian treatments are all offered on the spa menu. The spa facilities were the most extensive of the Tahitian resorts toured, including deep sea plunge, lap pool, deep chiller walk, etc. Please note the thalasso treatments utilize water from 90 meters deep, but it is not considered “Thalasso Therapy” (because the water has a bit too much copper to be regarded as therapeutic). I suggest clients start with a Thalasso Bath (hydro-massage in sea water) before the signature 90-minute Deep Blue Massage. Over-water couples' treatment room is available with glass floor so you can watch fish swimming below you.

Le Taha'a Island Resort & Spa review

This is a very special place. For those dreaming of a tropical escape in Tahiti, their fantasies will be fulfilled here. On a private motu off the island of Taha’a (the “vanilla island” which is a beautiful, unspoiled island without an airport). You fly to Raitea and are transferred to the resort by boat (or take the helicopter transfer from the Bora Bora Pearl for a spectacular arrival). This Relais & Chateaux property offers luxurious accommodations and facilities without sacrificing the authentic Polynesian spirit. Quiet and peaceful, with gorgeous grounds, we may have discovered paradise.

From my over-water bungalow, I could feed the fish from bed or the canoe-shaped tub by opening the glass tables! The separate shower was slate with coral accents. Room amenities included a cd-player, expresso machine, and bamboo vase with incense sticks stuck into sand.

The Beach Villas have private plunge pool and indoor/outdoor shower. For two couples traveling together, the Two-bedroom Royal Beach Villa is the same price as 2 bungalows with lots of extra space and amenities including a big pool and outdoor dining area. Three restaurants (with great food!), two bars, Manea Spa (see photo) and lots of activities are available if you can get yourself out of the water. I recommend snorkeling in their coral garden with a guide to see a multitude of brightly-colored fish.

I made it back safe and sound.

I made myself get up this morning so I can get back on East Coast time asap, and I feel OK. Not great, but OK. If only I could book a spa day at the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa; I could really use a 90-minute “Deep Blue Massage” and Thalasso Bath.

Last day in Tahiti

Last night, we attended the Polynesian Show at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort in Papeete and it was amazing! The dances are a bit similar to Hawaii (fabulous grass skirts, those graceful hand gestures and there's some ukelele. The drumming is fast, the hips are hopping in every direction. Fire dancers blow huge plumes of flame and twirl flaming batons. The dancers were so dreamy that one woman almost got the vapors!

This morning we went to Le Marche, the local market. It's Sunday and the locals were out doing their shopping (no souveniers for sale today and the stalls closed before Church at 10am). Every kind of fish we saw snorkeling were on ice and machete-weilding guys decapitated and filleted them with lightning speed. Lots of French pastries, and produce too.

Then we had breakfast with the Tahiti Tourism Board, before heading to our last site inspection at Le Meridien and then lunch. Now I have a couple hours to relax, pack and get ready for the flight home. This has been an great trip and I love Tahiti. Stay tuned for resort reviews when I get home...

Bora Bora, Day 9 and 10

We managed to see 7 resorts in Bora Bora, which was all the Virtuoso properties: St. Regis, Bora Bora Nui (Starwood Luxury Collection), Bora Bora Pearl (Leading Hotels of the World), InterContinental Resort & Thalasso Spa, InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana, Hotel Bora Bora (AmanResort), and Bora Bora Lagoon (Orient Express). As rushed as it was, they tried to give us the grand tour, including a meal. I took good notes and lots of photos! It may really be the most beautiful island in the world- crystal clear water with so many shades of blue in the lagoon, and the main island's mountains are so dramatic and green.

The big news is that the Hotel Bora Bora is closing October 1 for two years. They will level the entire property and start from scratch, opening in time for their 50th anniversary with fewer rooms. They wouldn't show us the plans, but all the new units will have private pools and (gasp!) televisions. The resort will also have a pool, spa and gym. The style will be Aman meets Polynesia. It's a fabulous location, and the resort has a very loyal clientele who will resist change, but it's overdue. Most of their staff will be picked up by the Four Seasons, but they'll be offered their old positions when she re-opens...

My last night in Tahiti is at the InterContinental Resort Tahiti in Papeete. They had a great Polynesian show, by far the best we've seen. Lovely ladies in grass skirts, bare-chested men in pareos playing with fire, and great drums. I had a great view of the spectacular sunset and the island of Moorea from my room.

Another busy day in paradise- we are the only people rushing in Tahiti! It was so sad to check out of my villa at the St. Regis. First stop was the InterContinental Thalasso for tour and breakfast. It was gorgeous- sexy contemporary Polynesian décor with a huge Thalasso Spa. Then we went to the Bora Bora Pearl Resort, which was re-scheduled from yesterday. This is a lovely property, one of the Leading Hotels of the World, with a very authentic feeling. The landscaping is especially appealing, and the spa was special. Then off to the InterContinental Le Moana for tour and lunch. Quick stop at Bloody Mary’s and then check into Hotel Bora Bora. We had just a couple hours to play before dinner.

Tahiti Day 7

Another early morning for a breakfast meeting and a tour of the Spa and the Royal Villa at the St. Regis Resort in Bora Bora. This 3-bedroom villa has 5 bathrooms, a private pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steamroom and outdoor shower, and a professional kitchen. (Call me for rates!).

The Bora Bora Pearl had to cancel our site inspection and lunch this afternoon so I will FINALLY get a little to time to play. Shall I snorkel in the Lagoonarium, enjoy the infinity pool, relax at the beach or just swim from my villa? It is so beautiful here I can hardly belileve it.

Tonight we have dinner at the St. Regis' signature restaurant "Lagoon by Jean Georges" hosted by the General Manager and the Starwood Regional Manager. I think it'll probably be pretty good.

Tahiti Day 6

Woke up early to snorkel in the coral garden- beautiful with many fish. Took a dip from my bungalow before going to breakfast. Was very sad to leave Le Taha'a but was curious to see how the St. Regis compares. The resort's boat dropped us off directly at the airport in Raitea where we boarded the scenic 20 minute flight to Bora Bora. The airport is on a private motu (small island) where the St. Regis had a boat waiting to transfer us to the resort.

We had lunch and toured a few rooms before dashing off to the Bora Bora Nui Resort for a site inspection and dinner.

My over-the-water villa at the St. Regis is enormous with fabulous views of Mount Otemanu.
